Rep counting

How does Bunrise count my reps?

Bunrise uses your iPhone’s front camera and Apple’s Vision framework to track body joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. It counts a rep when you go through the full movement and come back up. Everything runs on your iPhone, and no video is uploaded.

Before counting starts there’s a short setup check: phone upright, body in frame, start position, then hold still until the ring fills and you see GO. That’s why walking up to the phone or picking it up never counts as a rep.

Where should I put my phone?

Squats: lean the phone upright against something about 2 metres (6 feet) away, so your whole body, head to feet, fits in the frame.

Push-ups: stand the phone upright on the floor, about an arm’s length in front of you, screen facing you. Rico needs to see your head, shoulders and hands.

Prop the phone against something solid, like a wall, a shoe or a stack of books, so it doesn’t slide or fall over mid-set.

It’s not counting (or it’s counting badly). What now?
  • Light: turn on a lamp. Dark rooms at 6 a.m. are the most common problem, and Bunrise will ask you to turn on a light if it can’t see you.
  • Frame: check the setup checklist on screen. For squats, step back until your feet are in frame.
  • Range: half reps don’t count. Squats go hips back and down, then stand tall. Push-ups go chest towards the floor and all the way back up.
  • One person: keep other people (and pets, ideally) out of the shot.
  • Practice: try Alarms › Try it now › Practice or Test ring before tomorrow’s alarm. Both are rehearsals: nothing counts and nothing’s saved.

Still stuck? Email us with your iPhone model, the move and where the phone was. It helps us tune the counter.

Squats or push-ups: can I switch?

Yes. Each alarm has its own move and rep count (5 to 100): tap the alarm in the Alarms tab to change it. Your default move for new alarms is in You › Settings (gear icon) › Default move. Practice rounds and test rings use your alarm’s move.

Is my camera footage uploaded anywhere?

No. Rep counting happens on your iPhone. Proof clips are stored on your iPhone and only leave it if you tap Share or Save to Photos. Rather not have clips at all? Switch off You › Settings (gear icon) › Save proof clips: the camera then just counts, and nothing is recorded. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Alarms and the 10-minute rule

What happens if I just mute it?

That’s the 10-minute rule. Bunrise rings for up to 10 minutes. Silencing it with the side or volume button, muting it in the app or leaving the app only buys you 30 seconds: then it rings again. Do your reps and it stops for good.

If you haven’t done them 10 minutes after the ring time, it gives up and the morning counts as slept through. Your streak resets, unless a Streak Freeze covers the day. If you’re already doing your reps when the 10 minutes run out, finish them: they still count.

Can I give up on a challenge?

Yes, but it takes commitment. On a real alarm, press and hold the chicken-out button for 40 seconds. Let go early and the countdown starts over, and the alarm keeps ringing while you hold. Your streak resets. You can also just stop moving: the alarm keeps ringing until its 10 minutes are up, then stops on its own and the morning counts as slept through. Practice rounds, test rings and duels have a normal way out and never touch your streak. An early-bird round (beating your alarm to it) can be left at no cost too, until the alarm rings into it.

If anything hurts, stop. A streak is not worth an injury.

What is period mode?

Switch on period mode (on the Today tab, or in You › Settings) and every alarm asks for half its reps, never fewer than 5, for 5 days. Then it switches itself off, so you don’t have to remember. Only its end date is saved, on your iPhone, and it’s never sent to us or anyone else. Practice rounds, test rings and duels keep their reps.

I’m sick or hurt. What should I do?

Switch tomorrow’s alarm off, or lower its reps, more than 4 hours before it rings (that’s when it locks). If you wake up unwell, don’t do the reps: hold the chicken-out button for 40 seconds, or let it ring out.

Why does Bunrise ask for alarm permission?

With alarm permission on, Bunrise schedules real iOS alarms, so they ring even in Silent mode and during a Focus, and show up on the Lock Screen like the Clock app’s alarms.

If you said no, Bunrise falls back to notifications, which may not break through Silent mode or Focus. To turn alarms on, open Bunrise › You › Settings (gear icon) › Permissions › Open iOS Settings, and allow alarms for Bunrise.

I can’t edit or turn off my alarm.

Alarms lock 4 hours before they ring, so 1 a.m. you can’t cancel what you planned. Right after you create or edit an alarm, you get 5 minutes to change your mind. After the alarm rings, it unlocks again.

Will the alarm ring if my phone is off or the app is closed?

Alarms are scheduled with iOS, so they ring even if you’ve closed Bunrise. They can’t ring if your iPhone is switched off or the battery is dead. Charge your phone overnight. For anything critical (a flight, an exam, medication), set a backup alarm.

How do I add the widget?

Home Screen: touch and hold an empty area, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and pick Bunrise.

Lock Screen: touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, tap the widget area under the clock, and pick Bunrise.

The Rise widget shows your streak and next alarm.

Bunrise+ and purchases

What does Bunrise cost? Is there a free version?

Bunrise is free to download, but there’s no free plan: using it takes Bunrise+. At the end of setup you pick a plan and start a 3-day free trial (for eligible new subscribers). Then it’s $29.99 per year (about $0.58 a week) or $9.99 per week in the US. Local prices are shown in the app before you buy. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends and you won’t be charged.

Both plans include everything: the alarm and its camera rep counter, the 10-minute rule, Rico, streaks, XP, badges and quests, proof clips, cards and duels, period mode, unlimited alarms, every alarm sound, your full history, a Streak Freeze every week and the whole Closet. There’s one free trial per Apple Account, whichever plan you start it on.

What happens when my trial or subscription ends?

Bunrise shows the Bunrise+ screen when you open it, and the rest of the app waits there until you subscribe again or restore. Your alarms don’t hold you hostage: alarms you already set keep ringing, and you can still squat them off, hold the chicken-out button or let them ring out. A wake-up challenge always opens, subscription or not.

Don’t want them anymore? Tap Turn off my alarms on the Bunrise+ screen.

How do I restore my purchase?

Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple Account you used to subscribe. On a new or reset iPhone, finish the short setup, then tap Restore purchases on the Bunrise+ screen. Already in the app? It’s also in Bunrise › You › Settings (gear icon) › Bunrise+. There’s no Bunrise account, so your subscription is tied to your Apple Account.

How do I cancel?
  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Bunrise+, then Cancel Subscription.

You can also get there from Bunrise › You › Settings › Manage subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before your trial or current period ends to avoid the next charge. You keep Bunrise+ until the end of your free trial or the period you paid for. After that, see “What happens when my trial or subscription ends?” above. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Apple’s guide: Cancel a subscription from Apple.

Can I get a refund?

Apple handles all payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com (Apple’s guide: Request a refund). We can’t issue refunds directly.

I have a promo or offer code.

Tap Redeem offer code on the Bunrise+ screen (it opens at the end of setup). Already subscribed? It’s also in Bunrise › You › Settings (gear icon) › Bunrise+ › Redeem offer code.

Your data

How do I delete my data?

Do I need an account?

No. There’s no sign-up and no login. Your progress lives on your iPhone and your subscription is tied to your Apple Account.
